Tips from Staples on Small Business Security for the Holidays

November 30, 2009 – Here's something that recently landed in my email box. Staples Network Services has put together a list of things that small businesses should keep in mind during the holiday shopping season. There are a lot of security traps that can trip you up like cybercriminals spreading viruses.

Staples Network Services by Thrive
, a Staples business that provides small-and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) with access to a full range of IT services, recently compiled a list of tips to remind you of important security precautions to consider during the holiday season. HEre are a few.

For Employees: Even if not on “job” time, a few minutes shopping online at lunch or before work can cause some significant security problems. These tips can help increase employee awareness:
  • Never assume: Make sure all Web sites are using SSL encryption while entering personal information. That means looking for a padlock or a key symbol.
  • Storing information is dangerous: Don’t allow sites to save a username or password. Also avoid providing a work e-mail address as contact information.
  • It’s all relative: Treat social networking sites with the same caution as other Web sites. Social sites are a growing target for fraudsters and virus writers.
  • Avoid the avoidable: If the deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.

A quick reminder to your staff would be a good thing for you to do. It's always a good idea to be safe ratner than sorry. Do you have additional tips? Please leave a comment.
